About the position

Join the Nantahala Hiking Club for a volunteer work day focused on trail maintenance. This event is designed for individuals of all experience levels, providing an opportunity to contribute to the upkeep of local hiking trails while enjoying the outdoors.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a safety briefing session before starting work.
  • Hike 2-6 miles to the worksite, depending on the scheduled tasks and location.
  • Clear drains to prevent erosion on the trail.
  • Cut back brush to enhance the hiking experience and treadway.
  • Refresh the iconic white blazes for trail navigation.
  • Make repairs to trail features such as shelters and privies.
  • Maintain trail quality by picking up litter and removing graffiti.
  • Add improvements to the trail, such as steps or waterbars.

Requirements

  • No prior experience is necessary; beginners are welcome.
  • Participants should be physically prepared to hike 2-6 miles.
  • Must wear long pants and sturdy boots.

Nice-to-haves

  • Work gloves (if available)
  • A warm hat and rain jacket for sudden weather changes.
