About the position

CenterPoint Energy is seeking a Helper to join the High Voltage and System Operations Team in Houston, TX. This role involves assisting in the construction and maintenance of high voltage electrical systems, requiring work in various outdoor conditions and the ability to respond to emergencies. The Helper will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical facilities, particularly during storm restoration efforts.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the construction, maintenance, relocation, diagnosis of problems, and repair of Transmission voltage electrical facilities.
• Work as directed to assist in the restoration of power during storm events.
• Maintain prompt attendance and perform duties on various shifts, including holidays, weekends, and evenings.
• Respond 24/7 in emergency situations and work in all types of weather.
• Operate company vehicles safely and in compliance with applicable laws and company policies.
• Interpret blueprints, work orders, manuals, and other technical materials related to the job.
• Accept apprenticeship when offered and meet company requirements for advancement in the apprenticeship program.
• Obtain and maintain a Class A license with all required endorsements for the Transmission Department.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to work outside in harsh weather conditions and right of way conditions.
• Ability to remain in the Greater Houston area during emergency events and be available for extended shifts.

Nice-to-haves

• Work experience in construction, skilled trades, or maintenance of high voltage electrical systems in an outside environment.
