About the position

The Health & Elder Unit (HELU) at Colorado Legal Services (CLS) is seeking a part-time paralegal to support attorneys in handling public benefits cases for low-income individuals and seniors. This role involves assisting clients in obtaining or retaining vital benefits, understanding complex program requirements, and managing overpayments. The paralegal will work closely with attorneys, engage in legal research, document preparation, and community outreach, contributing to the mission of promoting economic security and well-being for vulnerable populations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate extensively with attorneys in the unit.
  • Prepare legal documents and letters.
  • Conduct legal research and gather relevant facts and documents.
  • Identify legal issues and summarize client and agency documents.
  • Interview clients, witnesses, and other third parties.
  • Develop and update informational community education material.
  • Increase outreach efforts for the unit.
  • Assist in the timely closing of cases.
  • Meet with clients in their homes and travel to appointments with the Social Security Administration and other entities.
  • Attend community outreach events representing CLS.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; paralegal certificate or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Strong communication skills for client interaction and outreach.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in legal research and writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and adaptability to changing needs.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and comfort with technology.

Nice-to-haves

  • Spanish language proficiency or knowledge of other languages.
