About the position

The Herdsman position at a small dairy in Illinois involves overseeing the health and management of dairy cattle. The role focuses on AI breeding, pregnancy checking, and ensuring the overall health of calves and heifers. The Herdsman will also be responsible for milking, monitoring fresh and problem cows, and performing various health care tasks. This position requires hands-on experience in dairy operations and herd health management.

Responsibilities

• Perform AI breeding and pregnancy checks.
• Provide health care for calves and heifers, including dehorning and tagging.
• Milk cows and monitor fresh and problem cows.
• Diagnose and treat sick cows, including administering IVs and medications.
• Mix and feed rations to the herd.
• Bedding and cleaning of pens.
• Move calves as needed.

Requirements

• Current dairy experience is mandatory.
• Herd health skills to diagnose and treat sick cows.
• Experience with AI breeding.
• Knowledge of feed and nutrition.
• Basic computer and record-keeping skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Pregnancy checking experience is a plus.
• Hoof trimming experience is a plus.
• Equipment operation experience is a plus.
• Mechanical background preferred.
