About the position

The Research Assistant at People's Community Clinic will play a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of children aged 4 months to 6 years. This part-time position involves biological sample collection during well-child check appointments, ensuring that caregivers provide informed consent and complete a parent questionnaire that assesses environmental and social factors affecting the child's health. The assistant will also be responsible for data entry related to the collected samples into the clinic's i2i system and will submit de-identified data to a team of scientists at the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. This role is vital in contributing to research that aims to improve child health outcomes in underserved communities. The position requires a commitment to working with children and their families, demonstrating empathy and support throughout the process. The assistant will collect various biological samples, including saliva, buccal cells, hair, and blood, while maintaining a meticulous inventory of pediatric participants and the types of samples gathered. Additionally, the assistant will coordinate the preparation of samples for international shipping to laboratories that will further analyze the biological samples. Ensuring the sterilization and disinfection of materials and the exam room used for sample collection is also a key responsibility, highlighting the importance of maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for both the children and the staff.

Responsibilities

  • Biological sample collection which includes saliva, buccal cells, hair, and blood.
  • Maintain data inventory of pediatric participants and type of samples gathered from each.
  • Coordinate and prepare samples for international shipping to labs further analyzing biological samples.
  • Ensure sterilization and disinfecting of materials and exam room used for sample collection.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Some college, specifically in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics courses, preferred.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) required.
  • Experience working with children between birth and 6 years of age.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working with underserved populations in a community setting.
  • Must be empathetic, supportive, and patient.
  • Ability to work with people of many cultures.
  • Ability to take initiative and willingness to learn.
  • Understanding of data entry and confidentiality.
