The Psychiatric/Mental Health (PMH) Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role in promoting well-being through prevention and education, as well as the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. This position requires a wide range of nursing, psychosocial, and neurobiological skills. The PMH RN is responsible for making clinical judgments effectively and efficiently, demonstrating critical thinking and performance ability in coordinating patient care. The role involves working in various settings and providing comprehensive care to individuals, families, and communities when applicable. Essential duties include utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in a psychiatric facility setting. The PMH RN partners with individuals to achieve their recovery goals, conducts intake screenings, evaluations, and triage, and provides case management. They are also responsible for teaching self-care activities, administering and monitoring psychobiological treatment regimens, and practicing crisis intervention and stabilization. Engaging in psychiatric rehabilitation and intervention, educating patients, families, and communities, and coordinating care within interdisciplinary teams are also key responsibilities. The PMH RN evaluates signs and symptoms indicating physiological and psychosocial changes in the patient's condition, identifies and prioritizes actions based on patient care requirements, and provides a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic patient environment. They revise the plan of care according to evaluations, changes in psychiatric and medical plans, and effective or ineffective nursing interventions. A strong awareness and understanding of suicide prevention, as well as knowledge of community resources and outpatient programs for mental health and substance use disorders, are essential. Adherence to facility/client procedures and protocols is mandatory, and the PMH RN may perform other duties as assigned or necessary.
