About the position

The High Performance Computing Computer Scientist 2 position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) involves conducting research and development in high-performance computing (HPC) technologies. The role focuses on addressing complex scientific computing challenges through innovative hardware and software solutions, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and contributing to the advancement of computing systems and algorithms. The candidate will engage with various stakeholders to enhance PNNL's HPC capabilities and present research findings in technical venues.

Responsibilities

  • Building an understanding of key scientific computing challenges and developing new computing technologies to address those challenges
  • Working across scientific disciplines to understand diverse computing needs
  • Independently pursuing research to address computing challenges across domains
  • Developing original ideas that will contribute to project needs and deliverables
  • Presenting original research in technical venues, including conferences and journals
  • Engaging with sponsors to share PNNL's research and better understand sponsor needs
  • Building professional networks across the laboratory, academia, and industry to grow and apply PNNL's High-Performance Computing capabilities
  • Designing and developing computers and computational systems, including both hardware and software, with a focus on architectures, languages, and applications.

Requirements

  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA -OR- PhD
  • Understanding mathematical foundation and theory of scientific Machine Learning, as well as expertise in applying AI/ML capabilities to scientific challenge problems
  • Experience creating and processing scientific and engineering datasets
  • Expertise designing and implementing scientific software
  • Expertise in quantum computing, including device theory, quantum computer architecture design, quantum benchmarking and codesign.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in hardware/software codesign
  • Knowledge of system software including compilers
  • Familiarity with large-scale system modeling, performance prediction and optimization methods and tools, next-generation computing architectures, and emerging distributed scientific workflows.
