About the position

Kelly Services is actively recruiting for a High Performance Computing Operations Specialist for a Long Term Contract opportunity in Midland, MI. This position is part of the Information Research (IR) team, which provides leading-edge information technology (I/T) capabilities and information resources to meet strategic research and development (R&D) initiatives. The IR team combines information technology, R&D experience, and physical science knowledge to develop capabilities and analyses that support R&D growth and innovation commitments. The primary focus of this role is to enhance Client R&D's competitive advantage through effective use of information technology and informatics. In this role, the High Performance Computing Operations Specialist will be responsible for building, testing, and deploying containerized software, such as Docker and Singularity, within the Client's High Performance Computing (HPC) environment. The position requires a strong understanding of Linux operating systems and applications, as well as HPC concepts, including MPI programming and job schedulers. Additionally, the specialist will provide user support, documentation, and consulting to ensure the effective use of HPC resources. Infrequent after-hours support may be required, emphasizing the need for flexibility and commitment to the role. Key responsibilities include supporting and operating Linux-based servers, integrating and optimizing open-source and commercial software within containers, developing containers with Docker and Apptainer technology, troubleshooting web-based HPC applications, and applying appropriate security modifications to Linux systems. The specialist will also maintain and support commercial modeling and simulation environments, ensuring that all systems operate efficiently and securely.

Responsibilities

  • Support and operation of Linux-based servers
  • Open source and commercial software integration, support and optimization within containers
  • Developing containers with Docker and Apptainer (formerly Singularity) technology
  • Operate and troubleshoot web-based HPC applications, services, and workflows
  • Reviewing and applying appropriate security modifications to Linux systems
  • Maintain and support commercial modeling and simulation environments

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in system administration
  • Strong knowledge of RedHat and Debian-based operating systems
  • Proficient in Bash scripting and other shell scripting languages
  • Experience building and maintaining open-source and commercial software with Docker or Apptainer container technology
  • Experience developing and securing containerized applications and HPC environments
  • Knowledge of Linux file systems and permissions
  • Knowledge of shared network storage protocols (NFS, CIFS)

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in Azure Pipelines or CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) processes
  • Experience with HPC job scheduling systems (e.g., Slurm, Torque)
  • Experience with HPC technologies like GPUs, deep learning frameworks, distributed systems, and service-oriented architecture
  • Experience with parallel computing paradigms (MPI, OpenMP, etc.)
