About the position

The High Power Radio Frequency Engineer position at Los Alamos National Laboratory involves working within the Accelerator Operations and Technology Division, specifically in the Radio Frequency Engineering group. The role focuses on the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of high power RF systems used in accelerator technology, contributing to the LANSCE complex's modernization and operational efficiency. The position is available at two levels, R&D Engineer 1 and R&D Engineer 2, with responsibilities scaling according to the level of expertise and experience of the candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of LANSCE high power RF systems.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of RF system upgrades as part of the LANSCE Modernization Project.
  • Provide on-call support for high power RF systems after hours and on weekends.
  • Manage maintenance activities and analyze RF system data for design enhancements (R&D Engineer 2).
  • Plan, design, implement, and manage RF system upgrade projects (R&D Engineer 2).
  • Provide power electronics expertise related to solid state and gridded vacuum tube amplifiers (R&D Engineer 2).
  • Support LANSCE physicists and scientists on special projects (R&D Engineer 2).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 2 years of related experience for R&D Engineer 1; 4 years for R&D Engineer 2 or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand schematics.
  • Experience in microwave engineering, RF power amplifiers, and pulsed-power systems.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting, installing, and testing high-power RF or pulsed power systems (R&D Engineer 2).
  • Record of contributions to the design and development of high-power RF amplifier systems (R&D Engineer 2).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with RF, high-voltage DC, and pulsed-power systems.
  • Experience with CAD software.
  • Experience with computer-based circuit layout simulation tools (PSpice, Multisim, LTSPice, etc.).
  • Experience with NI LabView and LabView/FPGA programming.
  • Experience with matrix algebra and block diagram simulation software (Matlab/Simulink, Scilab/Xcos, etc.).
  • Operations experience at an accelerator facility.
