About the position

The position is focused on the development of new capabilities and technologies for optical fabrication within the Advanced Optics surface finishing group at Corning. The role involves innovating optical manufacturing technologies for high-precision optical elements, collaborating with experts, and enhancing Corning's optical manufacturing capabilities for semiconductor inspection instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze optical fabrication processes using scientific and engineering principles.
  • Deepen understanding of optical fabrication processes to enhance manufacturing capabilities.
  • Develop new polishing processes for various optical substrates and components.
  • Assess technical risks and challenges for high-precision component fabrication.
  • Collaborate with finance and engineering to evaluate optical fabrication process options and ROI.
  • Communicate results effectively to peers and management.
  • Document findings and assist in transferring developed solutions to engineering teams.
  • Stay updated with advancements in optical fabrication through literature and conferences.

Requirements

  • B.S. required; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred in optics, physics, material science, chemistry, or related STEM fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with high-precision optical fabrication processes.
  • Experience with high-precision optics fabrication for visible and DUV systems.
  • Deep knowledge of asphere/freeform optical fabrication techniques.
  • Experience with CNC platforms and various optical finishing techniques.
  • Hands-on experience fabricating optics on different substrates.
  • Ability to quantify cost, schedule, and performance benefits of new processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with EUV and X-ray optics.
  • Experience with diamond-turning of optics.
  • Ability to operate in a cleanroom environment.
  • Knowledge of optical surface cleaning processes.
  • Basic understanding of coating impacts on optical performance.
  • Familiarity with material and surface characterization methods.
  • Experience with acid etching of optical substrates.
  • Ability to perform data analysis using software like MatLab or Python.
