About the position

The High School Assistant Boys Track Coach at Hammond Central HS is responsible for assisting the athletic director and building principal in planning, coordinating, and directing the track program. The role emphasizes participation and sportsmanship over competition, aiming to foster physical development, leadership, and good citizenship among student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible to the building principal and the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
  • Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for the implementation of these objectives.
  • Develop the athletic program to promote participation and friendly competition, prioritizing these over win-loss records.
  • Recognize athletic activities as integral to a balanced educational program and coordinate them with the normal school schedule.
  • Provide vigorous activities to develop physical fitness and cardiovascular efficiency.
  • Instill principles of leadership and good citizenship through sportsmanship in students.
  • Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through physical, emotional, and social experiences.
  • Stay knowledgeable of rules, regulations, and policies set by the Hammond School Board and relevant athletic associations.
  • Assist in preparing an athletic budget, hiring officials, requisitioning equipment, and providing team transportation.
  • Follow procedures for caring for injured athletes as outlined in the Handbook for Interscholastic Athletics.
  • Ensure all participants have the required physical examinations and signed certificates on file before participation.
  • Check player eligibility and maintain eligibility lists in collaboration with the Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
  • Develop plans for issuing and receiving play equipment, ensuring proper condition and management of all assigned equipment.
  • Build sound public relations with parents and media personnel.
  • Attend departmental staff meetings and professional growth activities as approved by the principal.
  • Cooperate with other athletic staff to establish rules for conduct, dress, and appearance.

Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of the sport being taught.
  • Thorough understanding of participants physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • Skill in teaching the fundamentals of the sport.
  • Desirable character and personality traits.
  • High moral standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff members, and administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to the instructor's responsibilities.
  • Availability to supervise activities beyond the school day.
