About the position

Uncommon High School English Language Arts (ELA) teachers are dedicated educators who focus on literature and creating an engaging classroom culture that prepares students for college. The role emphasizes reading, student-led discourse, and the use of diverse texts to inspire a love for literature and develop critical thinking skills. Teachers are expected to analyze student performance and adapt their teaching strategies to maximize learning outcomes, while also fostering strong relationships with students and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Teach from a robust literature curriculum that prioritizes inclusive texts and prepares students for Advanced Placement (AP), SAT, and collegiate level coursework.
  • Guide students in analyzing literature by authors such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and William Shakespeare.
  • Develop students' independent and collaborative reading, writing, and discussion skills.
  • Facilitate student-led discourse and teach students to use evidence to make sophisticated claims.
  • Regularly analyze student comprehension and writing to adapt lessons for maximum learning.
  • Meet weekly with the principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work and assessments.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners.
  • Build positive relationships with students and engage with their families to support learning needs.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Collaborate with grade level teams to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

Requirements

  • Self-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes.
  • 1-2 years of experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities preferred.
  • Academic expertise in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Must meet NJ state certification eligibility requirements.
