About the position

The English Teacher at Ferris High School is responsible for developing students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teacher will foster communication skills and develop an understanding and appreciation of literature. The position involves motivating students to read a variety of publications, comprehend and critically assess reading materials, and promote skills in English reading, grammar, and syntax. The teacher will work under the general supervision of the School Principal.

Responsibilities

• Develops and administers English education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
• Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences.
• Teaches knowledge and skills in English grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary and proper word usage.
• Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions on a variety of reading materials.
• Works with students to prepare materials for inclusion in literary publications and contests.
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifying instructional methods as needed.
• Maintains familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests.
• Continues to acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research.
• Organizes and maintains a system for accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting.
• Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication.
• Ensures that student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies.
• Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and maintains inventory records.

Requirements

• State Certification as an English Education Teacher.
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
• Master's Degree in a related area preferred.
• Successful prior teaching experiences in English are a plus.
