About the position

The High School Equivalency/Adult Basic Education Instructor is responsible for providing instruction and assessment tailored to the individual academic needs of students in College and Career Readiness programs. This part-time role focuses on preparing at-risk students and displaced workers for higher education and job market entry through personalized, self-paced learning. The instructor will maintain student portfolios, document attendance and progress, and perform essential faculty responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Providing instruction for College and Career Readiness students in High School Equivalency (HSE)/Adult Basic Education (ABE).
  • Developing course outlines and lesson plans that adhere to NC Content Standards.
  • Securing educational resources to accommodate diverse learning styles of adult students.
  • Submitting a list of classroom supplies and materials to the coordinator.
  • Assessing students and planning their individual programs of study.
  • Maintaining files to document student progress in their programs of study.
  • Tracking student hours to post test students and obtain education functioning level gains.
  • Completing student data forms required by the state Literacy Education Information System (LEIS).
  • Submitting pay and attendance sheets to the College and Career Readiness Chief HSE Examiner/AHS Coordinator.
  • Entering student hours daily to track attendance.
  • Following up on students without placement tests or those who left the program early.
  • Attending staff meetings, professional development activities, and workshops as requested.
  • Participating in college planning processes and serving on committees as assigned.
  • Completing twelve hours of professional development annually.
  • Achieving a CORE, ASE, ESOL, or STAR professional development credential within two years of hire.
  • Adhering to the College and Career Readiness Calendar.
  • Completing other duties as directed and maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work area.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and write as applicable to subject area.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries and complaints from students and staff.
  • Ability to effectively present information to students and staff.
  • Mathematical skills to tabulate student scores.
  • Reasoning ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Adult Education with teaching experience.
  • Teaching certificate or other relevant certifications.
