About the position

The High School Life Skills/Exceptional Education Teacher at LEAD Public Schools is responsible for teaching and supporting students with IEPs in a low incidence classroom. This role focuses on providing work-based learning to assist students in their transition from high school to post-secondary life, ensuring that their educational needs are met while promoting independence and vocational skills. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues and administration to implement data-driven lesson plans and support students in achieving their academic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement data-driven lesson plans to support students with cognitive and/or developmental delays.
  • Develop individualized education programs (IEPs) for students.
  • Maintain special education files as directed by federal, state, and local practices.
  • Collect data on individual student skills to measure progress toward IEP goals.
  • Focus on functional curriculum and daily living skills as appropriate.
  • Support students in developing vocational skills for post-high school independence.
  • Advocate for students to gain exposure to general education settings as appropriate.
  • Plan effective instructional and/or behavioral strategies to adapt general curriculum for all students.
  • Direct and supervise education assistants to provide effective classroom support.
  • Assist other classroom teachers in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Valid Tennessee teaching license with appropriate content endorsement for SPED, or valid out-of-state license transferable to Tennessee within 90 days, or on track to complete necessary certification steps.
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with diverse student populations or in an urban setting preferred.
