About the position

Uncommon High School Math teachers play a crucial role in fostering self-guided learning among students in grades K-10. They are responsible for delivering a comprehensive math curriculum that includes subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, while preparing students for Advanced Placement and collegiate-level coursework. The position emphasizes building strong relationships with students and families, utilizing data analysis to inform instruction, and contributing to a positive school culture that supports academic and social-emotional development.

Responsibilities

  • Use a Math curriculum to teach content including Algebra, Geometry, or Calculus.
  • Support students in solving problems and thinking critically.
  • Foster confidence and meaningful engagement with mathematics among students.
  • Cultivate the ability to construct and justify viable arguments using reasoning and math vocabulary.
  • Work with the Math department to determine academic and engagement goals for students.
  • Meet weekly with the principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessments.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in the classroom.
  • Build positive relationships with students and partner with their families to support learning needs.
  • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community and encourage student achievement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Academic expertise in Mathematics, Science, Technology, Engineering, or related fields.
  • 1-2 years of experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (preferred).
  • Commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and investment in anti-racist practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social emotional and academic development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Teacher certification in New Jersey (not a prerequisite but must meet eligibility requirements).
