About the position

The High School Program Co-Op at ADM Trucking in Decatur, IL, is designed for high school seniors who are looking to gain practical experience in the fields of mechanics, wash bay operations, and dispatch/office administration. This part-time, hourly position is part of ADM's 12-month Career Pathways program, which aims to provide students with hands-on training and exposure to the transportation industry. To qualify, students must be at least 17 years old, maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher, and meet attendance requirements. A formal letter of recommendation is also required for program entry. Upon selection, students must pass a pre-employment drug screen and a lift test as per ADM's policies. The program is structured to provide students with various work schedules, including a summer co-op from June 2024 to July 2024, and fall and spring co-ops for credit from August 2024 to December 2024 and January 2025 to May 2025, respectively. The working hours will vary, with shifts from 8 am to 12 pm or 12 pm to 4 pm during the school year. The program culminates in a graduation ceremony in May 2025. Interns will be required to adhere to all government, company, and customer policies and regulations, including FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, DOL, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). It is important to note that interns are prohibited from driving motor vehicles or performing any work classified as hazardous by the Department of Labor (DOL).

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance duties with supervision as a mechanic.
  • Train to be a service mechanic and maintain good housekeeping of the work area.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Recognize safety hazards in the work environment.
  • Maintain a good attendance record and work well with others in the wash bay.
  • Conduct all job tasks with a positive safety attitude and maintain good housekeeping.
  • Follow instructions and lift hoses as required in the wash bay.
  • Work at heights and walk on wet surfaces as needed.
  • Lead a high volume of incoming calls in the dispatch/office role and respond appropriately to plants and customers.
  • Track goals and retrieve Driver/HOS information using the Dispatch System.
  • Communicate effectively with truck drivers and internal/external customers.
  • Make decisions regarding coverage for breakdowns and delays.
  • Coordinate replacement drivers for call-offs and build/distribute the driver schedule daily.
  • Willingness to work additional hours to cover vacations and flexibility to cross-train for multiple positions.

Requirements

  • Students must be at least 17 years old and a senior in high school.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Meet attendance requirements for the program.
  • Possess strong people and problem-solving skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in the use of a computer, with experience in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel preferred.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly, read, comprehend, and communicate effectively in person or by phone.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a mechanical or technical field is a plus.
  • Familiarity with transportation or logistics operations.
