About the position

The position involves providing direct support to students in a classroom setting, focusing on delivering instruction and ensuring effective learning through various co-teaching models and strategies. The individual will be responsible for the daily educational instruction and programming for students as outlined in their Individual Educational Program (IEP) at the high school level. A key aspect of the role is to create a conducive classroom environment that aligns with the maturity and interests of the students. The educator will guide the learning process towards achieving curriculum goals and will establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, effectively communicating these objectives to students. Collaboration with special education personnel, general education teachers, and administrators is essential, as well as working with building staff to integrate students into general education classrooms and programs. The role also includes providing specially designed instruction to students within a special education setting for part of the day, completing various reports and assessments as required by local, state, and federal mandates, and assisting classroom teachers and other staff in implementing necessary accommodations and modifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to students in a classroom by delivering instruction and ensuring learning through co-teaching models and strategies.
  • Responsible for daily educational instruction and programming for students as prescribed in their IEPs.
  • Create a conducive classroom environment appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
  • Guide the learning process toward achieving curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for lessons and projects.
  • Collaborate with special education personnel, general education teachers, and administrators.
  • Work with building staff to integrate students into general education classrooms and programs.
  • Provide specially designed instruction to students within a special education setting.
  • Complete daily/weekly/monthly data sheets, evaluation reports, progress reports, IEPs, and assessments as required.
  • Assist classroom teachers and staff in implementing accommodations and modifications.
  • Supervise the work of Educational Support Personnel (ESP) in both special and general education settings.
  • Adapt learning materials to students' needs and keep track of their progress.
  • Monitor children's behavioral patterns and arrange appropriate interventions.
  • Prepare students for transition to the next grade and inform parents about their performance.
  • Collaborate with support staff to create holistic intervention plans.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of curriculum content and apply Universal Design Strategies.
  • Plan and deliver effective instruction while promoting high standards for student achievement.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and district employees to advocate for students.
  • Promote equity and appreciation of diversity through culturally responsive practices.
  • Teach small group ELA and Math, Modified, and facilitate transition experiences.

Requirements

  • Experience working with high school students in a special education setting.
  • Knowledge of Individual Educational Programs (IEPs) and special education laws.
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with staff, students, and parents.
  • Understanding of curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Experience in adapting learning materials to meet diverse student needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies.
  • Background in behavioral intervention techniques.
  • Familiarity with transition planning and community-based activities.
