About the position

The High School Varsity Volleyball Coach at Waverly High School is responsible for leading and developing the volleyball program, fostering teamwork, and ensuring the academic and athletic success of student-athletes. The coach will communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff, while modeling good sportsmanship and creating a safe environment for all participants. This position is a seasonal role, running from August to November, and requires a commitment to the development of both individual players and the team as a whole.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and communicate clear and specific goals for the team and individual players throughout tryouts and the season.
  • Maintain open and honest communication with students, parents, other coaches, and the Athletic Director.
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge base of best practices specific to coaching volleyball.
  • Support and collaborate with coaches in other athletic programs.
  • Model and teach skills necessary for success in volleyball.
  • Support student academic expectations, responsibilities, and achievements.
  • Understand and apply Waverly's policies and procedures as they relate to athletics.
  • Promote and enforce the student-athlete code of conduct.
  • Connect athletic experiences with life experiences.
  • Provide an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration among coaches and players.
  • Develop rapport with the Grand Rapids community, including administration, coaches, parents, and students.
  • Model good sportsmanship at all times.
  • Create and maintain a safe and healthy environment for student-athletes.
  • Understand personal leadership style and its impact on student-athletes.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma.
  • Experience coaching volleyball athletes at the middle/high school level.
  • Proof of current First Aid CPR Certification prior to the first day of coaching.
  • Completion of an online concussion training course from either the CDC or the National Federation of State High School Associations prior to the first day of coaching.
  • Attendance at MHSAA Cap Program or willingness to attend.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written forms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in coaching other sports or athletic programs.
  • Advanced coaching certifications or training.
