Boston Government Services (BGS) is seeking a High-Temperature Solar Research and Development Engineer/Scientist to support the Department of Energy's (DOE) Solar Energy Technology Office (SETO) in Washington, DC. This role is crucial in advancing the nation's Concentrating Solar-thermal Power (CSP) capabilities, which is a key area of focus for the DOE. The selected candidate will serve as a technical advisor, interfacing with SETO staff and various research and development organizations, including government labs, industry, and academia. The primary goal is to identify transformative scientific concepts and unproven technologies that represent high-risk, high-reward investments aimed at radically advancing CSP technologies. The CSP program oversees approximately $60 million in annual research and development funds appropriated by Congress, with the overarching mission of supporting the development of concentrating solar-thermal technologies that could significantly decarbonize the US energy sector. The team is responsible for developing impactful funding programs and managing a portfolio of projects that range from early-stage research and development to first-of-a-kind demonstration pilot plants. The engineer/scientist will assess current and emerging CSP technologies for both electricity generation and process heat applications, identifying benefits and challenges associated with integrating these technologies into commercial energy systems. In addition to technical advisory responsibilities, the role includes preparing scientific and technical materials for stakeholder engagement forums, such as conferences and technical interchange meetings, which may involve government representatives, academia, and industry partners. The engineer/scientist will also assist in reviewing application materials and concept papers, supporting the government team in synthesizing information flow from Federal Contract Managers and Industry Partnerships, and conducting research to prepare technical briefings and related deliverables as assigned.
