About the position

The High Throughput Computing (HTC) Hardware Engineer at Jefferson Lab is responsible for leading the design and implementation of advanced HTC systems. This role involves collaboration with vendors, lab operations, and networking teams to innovate and enhance computing architectures that push the boundaries of current technology. The engineer will engage in research, system tuning, and documentation to support the lab's scientific objectives, ensuring that systems are efficient, cost-effective, and high-performing.

Responsibilities

  • Research and design leading HTC systems in coordination with laboratory staff and stakeholders.
  • Utilize trend and monitoring data to optimize compute systems.
  • Produce written documentation for various audiences, including system administrators and lab management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a relevant IT field.
  • 6+ years of experience in developing, deploying, and testing high throughput computing hardware solutions.
  • Experience with multiple hardware architectures (e.g., x86, ARM).
  • Proficiency in Linux/Unix variants, especially RedHat/RHEL.
  • Experience with virtualization and container architecture.
  • Ability to benchmark hardware and integrate relevant technologies into large-scale data solutions.
  • Experience with monitoring, profiling, or optimization of software tools for large-scale systems.
  • Strong diagnostic skills for resolving system-level issues and performance tuning.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a relevant IT field.
  • Experience supporting high throughput clusters with SLURM or similar workload managers.
  • Experience with scientific applications and troubleshooting application issues.
  • Familiarity with large scale data center operations, particularly thermal and power constraints.
  • Experience in an academic or research environment.
  • Deep understanding of TCP/IP and the Linux networking stack.
