About the position

The Highway Maintenance Operator I position within the Department of Transportation (DOT) involves performing physical labor and operating various self-propelled mobile equipment for the maintenance and repair of highway infrastructure. This role includes snow and ice control, maintenance of roadways, drainage systems, and signage, as well as preventive maintenance on equipment. The operator will work statewide and may direct the work of others on occasion.

Responsibilities

• Perform physical labor and operate self-propelled mobile equipment for highway maintenance.
• Drive snow plowing equipment during winter operations.
• Assist in maintenance tasks for bridge, traffic, roadside, and facility maintenance programs.
• Operate heavy trucks, tractors, and various support equipment such as compressors and hand tools.
• Provide a safe work environment by adhering to safety rules and regulations.
• Load and unload materials such as parts and de-icing chemicals.
• Assist in herbicide spraying operations and traffic control as needed.
• Perform emergency running repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Install and maintain highway signs and markers.
• Perform operational adjustments and minor repairs on power equipment.

Requirements

• Graduation from a senior high school.
• Experience in operating highway maintenance or heavy equipment over 26,000 lbs. GVW with airbrakes and manual transmissions.
• Must obtain and maintain a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with airbrake and tanker endorsements.
• Compliance with drug and alcohol testing regulations is mandatory.
• Physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with winter/emergency operations.
• Experience with general roads or site construction and heavy equipment.

Benefits

• Annual salary range of $55,647.00 - $63,650.00.
• Standard 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with on-call shifts.
