About the position

The Highway Maintenance Technician I position at the Florida Department of Transportation involves performing maintenance tasks on highways and bridges using various tools and equipment. The role requires independent manual labor, vehicle operation for site travel, and adherence to safety protocols while working outdoors in diverse weather conditions. This position is essential for ensuring the safety and functionality of Florida's transportation infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Use hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Perform independent manual labor with minimal supervision.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections and minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Clean and wash equipment as needed.
  • Perform rough carpentry, masonry, and painting tasks.
  • Assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Implement Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Knowledge of maintaining and repairing highways, bridges, and other highway structures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Capability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl, or bend frequently.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Experience in performing minor maintenance on vehicles.
  • Skill in operating motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
  • Possession of a Class E driver's license.
