About the position

The Health Information Coder is responsible for providing exceptional customer care to Southwest Health consumers, visitors, and staff. This role involves using coding work queues in the electronic health record system to select the most accurate codes according to established coding guidelines. The HIM Coder must communicate effectively with the Coding Supervisor and Billing Staff to resolve coding and claim processing issues promptly. Participation in ongoing education and meetings is essential to maintain coding certifications and ensure compliance with regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Review and code patient encounters of all specialties.
  • Ensure that all codes are accurately assigned.
  • Report missing or incomplete documentation to the analysis area or submit queries to providers if necessary.
  • Meet daily coding productivity and quality standards set forth by the department.
  • Review charge code entries for accuracy and make corrections as needed.
  • Serve as a resource regarding insurance denials and coding questions from the Revenue Cycle team.
  • Adhere to and follow all coding guidelines and legal requirements to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations.
  • Complete required continuing education to maintain coding credentials and license.
  • Support and assist the Coding Manager of HIM and Revenue Cycle leadership on special projects as requested.
  • Work directly with other departments and attend all internal/external meetings and training.

Requirements

  • Coding certification (e.g., CPC, CCS, RHIT) required.
  • Experience in health information management and coding.
  • Knowledge of coding guidelines and regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in coding.
  • Excellent communication skills for interaction with staff and providers.
