About the position

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) plays a crucial role in supporting Speech Language Pathologists by providing speech and language services as outlined in treatment plans. This position involves clinical, educational, documentation, and treatment-related activities, ensuring compliance with state regulations and effective communication with families and students.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) in providing components of a speech and language program as specified in the treatment plan.
  • Self-identify as SLPA to families, students, patients, and district staff.
  • Assist the SLP with speech, language, and hearing screenings without clinical interpretation.
  • Support the SLP during assessments of students, excluding administration and/or interpretation.
  • Provide bilingual translation during screening and assessment activities, exclusive of interpretation.
  • Document student performance accurately and timely, reporting to the supervising SLP.
  • Program and provide instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
  • Share information with students, families, caregivers, and staff regarding feeding strategies as directed by the SLP.
  • Adapt educational materials and equipment for intervention and student needs.
  • Serve as an interpreter for non-English speaking students and families.
  • Assist with clerical duties as directed by the SLP, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities.
  • Maintain and clean equipment used in the field according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Report treatment reactions or changes in student conditions to the supervising SLP.
  • Maintain communication with the district and other personnel to support the plan of care.
  • Participate in formal care conferences and meetings with the presence of the supervising SLP.
  • Support the supervising SLP in research projects and public relations programs.
  • Provide information to emergency response agencies for individuals with communication disorders.
  • Promote early identification and intervention activities.
  • Present primary prevention information to at-risk individuals or groups.
  • Comply with HIPAA and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations.
  • Participate in required supervision by a SLP to ensure quality of care.

Requirements

  • Must have an active SLPA license to apply.
  • Graduate of a SLPA program with an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders.
  • Successful completion of a minimum of 100 hours of supervised fieldwork experience or equivalent clinical experience as required by state and/or contract.
  • Current certification or licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant in the State of Practice.
  • One (1) year of prior professional Speech-Language Pathology Assistant experience preferred.
  • Comply with all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Ability to understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in the English language are required.
  • Computer proficiency is required.
