About the position

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) position at Amergis Healthcare Staffing involves assisting Speech Language Pathologists in providing essential speech and language services. The role includes clinical, educational, documentation, and treatment-related activities, ensuring compliance with state regulations and the physician's plan of care. The SLPA will work closely with students, families, and staff to support communication needs, particularly for those who are bilingual or require alternative communication methods.

Responsibilities

• Provides components of a speech and language program as specified in the treatment plan developed by a supervising SLP.
• Self-identifies as SLPA to families, students, patients, and district staff.
• Assists the SLP with speech, language, and hearing screenings without clinical interpretation.
• Assists the SLP during assessment of students, exclusive of administration and/or interpretation.
• Assists the SLP with bilingual translation during screening and assessment activities exclusive of interpretation.
• Provides timely and accurate documentation of student performance and reports this information to the supervising SLP.
• Programs and provides instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
• Demonstrates or shares information with students, families, caregivers, and staff regarding feeding strategies developed and directed by the SLP.
• May adapt educational materials and equipment for the purpose of providing intervention and/or meeting the student needs.
• May serve as an interpreter for students and families who do not speak English.
• Provides services under the supervision of the SLP in another language for individuals who do not speak English and English-language learners.
• May assist with clerical duties, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities, as directed by the SLP.
• Cleans and maintains equipment used in the field in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines.
• Reports reaction(s) to treatment or change(s) in condition of the student to the supervising SLP and alternate clinical designee as indicated.
• Maintains communication with the district and other personnel caring for the student to assure that their efforts effectively complement each other and support the objectives outlined in the plan of care within the scope of practice.
• May participate in formal care conferences, parent conferences, and intra-disciplinary team meetings only with the presence of the supervising SLP.
• Supports the supervising SLP in research projects, in-service training, public relations programs, and marketing programs.
• Provides information to emergency response agencies for individuals who have communication and/or swallowing disorders.
• Promotes early identification and early intervention activities.
• May present primary prevention information to individuals or groups known to be at risk for communication disorders.
• Exhibits compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
• Actively participates in the required supervision by a SLP to ensure quality of care to all persons served.

Requirements

• Must have an active SLPA license to apply.
• Graduate of a SLPA program with an associate's degree, or have a bachelor's degree in a speech-language pathology or communication disorders program.
• Successful completion of a minimum of 100 hours of supervised field work experience or its clinical experience equivalent as required by state and/or contract.
• Current certification or licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant in the State of Practice.
• One (1) year of prior professional Speech-Language Pathology Assistant experience preferred.
• Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice.
• Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program.
• Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation).
• Must meet all federal, state and local requirements.
• Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site.
• Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
• Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required.
• Computer proficiency required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
