About the position

The position involves performing clerical and technical support functions in the anatomic pathology laboratory, including specimen receipt, logging, and various technical duties. The role requires the use of a Cytospin centrifuge for body fluid procedures, slide filing, and assisting the Histotechnician with maintenance and housekeeping activities. The individual will also be responsible for preparing and maintaining surgical and cytology specimens, as well as performing various clerical duties to support the laboratory team.

Responsibilities

• Receive and log specimens from surgery accurately in the logbook.
• File surgical slides accurately and in a timely manner.
• Retrieve surgical slides and blocks as required by the Pathologist.
• Perform body fluid procedures using the Cytospin centrifuge.
• Assist in maintenance activities such as taking temperatures and cleaning equipment.
• Stain and coverslip prepared slides for Cytology and Histology.
• Prepare and maintain the card file for cytology specimens.
• Pre-label cassettes for the Pathologist for gross examination.
• Perform housekeeping activities including cleaning Cytospin parts and counters.
• Order supplies for the Anatomic Pathology lab sections weekly and as needed.
• Requisition and store alcohol solutions from Pharmacy.
• Clean and refill tissue processor beakers and staining dishes.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Six months to one year of medical experience, particularly in Histology or the laboratory is preferred.
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with phlebotomy is a plus.
