About the position

The Histology Technician position at MemorialCare involves the preparation and staining of tissue specimens for microscopic examination by pathologists. This role is crucial for assisting in the diagnosis of diseases and ensuring high-quality patient care. Responsibilities

• Ensures all tissue specimens are prepared in a prompt and timely manner according to established guidelines
• Properly performs routine and special stains
• Prepares send out requests for IHC staining
• Cleans and maintains the Histology Department and equipment to ensure efficient operation of the lab
• Records maintenance in the QC record
• Adheres to all policies and procedures relating to the Laboratory and Hospital Compliance Plans
• Logs surgical specimens and verifies completeness and accuracy of information
• Sections tissue samples using good microtome techniques to produce acceptable quality slides
• Prepares tissues on slides by examining, fixing, and processing the tissue for proper sample preservation
• Performs preventive maintenance activities as scheduled, documenting on appropriate logs
• Ensures Patient Safety by taking confirmatory steps regarding specimen identification
• Participates in department-specific education/training
• Documents any unusual occurrences, quality/safety issues, and customer complaints using the Variance Reporting process

Requirements

• 3-5 years of Histology experience preferred
• Knowledge of Histology equipment operation and specimen handling preferred
• Excellent computer skills required
• Courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics preferred
• Successful completion of histology internship and ASCP registration preferred
