About the position

The Histology Technologist PRN position at HCA Healthcare involves performing histology and cytology procedures in a high-volume laboratory environment. The role is essential for ensuring accurate specimen processing and preparation, contributing to timely diagnostic information for patient care. This position offers flexibility as it is PRN (as needed), allowing for a dynamic work schedule while being part of a committed team dedicated to patient well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Perform histology and cytology procedures including specimen processing/fixation, cell block preparation, embedding, microtomy, slide preparation, routine stains, IHC and special stains, case organization in accordance with department procedures.
  • Assure positive sample, block and slide identification and prepare and maintain reagents for routine stains and histology procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and instrumentation per manufacturer & department procedures and per department schedule.
  • Adhere to department policy with regards to performance and documentation of quality control and quality assurance for instrumentation, equipment and procedures performed.
  • Utilize independent judgement and problem-solving skills to ensure the accuracy of procedures performed and proper equipment performance.
  • Troubleshoot and take appropriate corrective action to resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely manner for resolution.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma AND minimum two years of histology experience OR High School Diploma with completion of an accredited program in Histo-technology OR Associate's degree in Chemistry, Biology AND one year of histology experience OR Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology or Chemistry.
  • National Certification as a MT (ASCP) or HT (ASCP) required; State license where required (CA, FL, GA, HI, LA, MT, NV, NY, ND, RI, WV).
  • Thorough knowledge of histology methods and correlation to disease processes.
  • Ability to follow protocols for the proper fixation and routine staining of samples.
  • Ability to consistently prepare and produce specimen sections with appropriate slide orientation, thickness, and stain quality for microscopic diagnosis by a pathologist.
  • Demonstrate good technique in the cutting, embedding, orientation and staining of specimens.
  • General knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork and organizational skills.
  • Ability to train others and effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
