About the position

The Community Programs Specialist position at the Michigan History Museum is a vital role that focuses on interpreting and presenting Michigan's rich history and historical artifacts. The specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing engaging programs that cater to diverse audiences, both at the museum and within the Greater Lansing Community. In this role, the Community Programs Specialist will spend a significant portion of their time collaborating with local, regional, and statewide partners to create new programs that resonate with the community. This includes designing drop-in and gallery programs aimed at specific target audiences, ensuring that the museum's offerings are accessible and relevant. Additionally, the specialist will plan and facilitate annual events and programs at the museum, which may include workshops, lectures, and interactive exhibits that draw in visitors and foster a deeper understanding of Michigan's history. Another key responsibility of this position is co-managing the museum's volunteer program. This involves recruiting, training, and overseeing volunteers who assist with various museum activities, ensuring that they are well-prepared to contribute to the museum's mission. The Community Programs Specialist will play a crucial role in creating a welcoming and educational environment for both volunteers and visitors, ultimately enhancing the overall experience at the Michigan History Museum.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement public events and programs at the Michigan History Museum and in the Greater Lansing Community.
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and statewide partners to create new programs.
  • Design drop-in and gallery programs for target audiences.
  • Plan and facilitate annual events and programs at the museum.
  • Co-manage the museum volunteer program, including recruitment and training of volunteers.

Requirements

  • Possession of a master's degree in history, art history, museum studies, anthropology, American studies, architecture, architectural history, urban planning, library/information science, historic preservation, or archival management.
  • For Historian 9: No specific type or amount of experience is required.
  • For Historian 10: One year of professional experience involving the study, preservation, analysis, interpretation, and preservation of history, historical artifacts, records, and sites equivalent to an Historian 9.
  • For Historian P11: Two years of professional experience involving the study, preservation, analysis, interpretation, and preservation of history, historical artifacts, records, and sites equivalent to an Historian, including one year equivalent to an Historian 10; or three years of professional experience recording, preserving, and presenting Michigan history, historical artifacts, records, and sites at a museum, historical site, archives, publication office, or historical site preservation office equivalent to a History Specialist 10.
