About the position

AECOM is seeking a Historian for our Burlington, NJ office. This will be a Hybrid position. The role involves independently conducting focused online and archival research of moderate scope and complexity as assigned by senior staff, scheduling, coordinating, and conducting research visits to local and regional archives, generating research summaries, outlines, timelines, bibliographies, and draft report content under the supervision of senior staff, maintaining organized research notes and files, both electronic and hardcopy, for use by AECOM cultural resources staff, and consulting with and incorporating the comments of senior staff into work products as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conducting focused online and archival research of moderate scope and complexity as assigned by senior staff
  • Scheduling, coordinating, and conducting research visits to local and regional archives
  • Generating research summaries, outlines, timelines, bibliographies, and draft report content under the supervision of senior staff
  • Maintaining organized research notes and files, both electronic and hardcopy, for use by AECOM cultural resources staff
  • Consulting with and incorporating the comments of senior staff into work products as directed

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or related discipline or demonstrated equivalency of experience or education in a related field
  • Valid Driver's License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review
  • Experience with report writing
  • Due to the nature of work, US Citizenship is required

Nice-to-haves

  • 1+ years of experience working with a variety of primary source materials that include historical maps, government documents, and deeds
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience identifying, evaluating, and interpreting primary and secondary source materials
  • Master's degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or a related discipline
  • Familiarity with state and national cultural resource preservation laws, guidelines, practices, procedures, and products
  • Must be able to perform basic research online and at physical repositories
  • Must have basic composition and proofreading skills
