Title Historic Preservation Intern Open Date 11/13/2024 Full-Time/Part-Time Seasonal Exempt/Non-Exempt Non-Exempt Bargaining / Non-Bargaining Division Community Investment Location Community Investment Reports To Historic Preservation Administrator Schedule 10-20 hours per week; flexible schedule during traditional business hours (8a-5p Mon-Fri) Pay Rate This is an unpaid intership Description This is an unpaid internship SUMMARY: The office of the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is seeking an intern(s) to fulfill one of three (3) areas of study: Digital Preservation, Preservation Fieldwork, and Preservation Outreach. An intern wishing to take on more work may express interest in two areas of study. All interns will support and shadow department staff, attend educational meetings as necessary, and learn about the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County. Interns will have the opportunity to complete a capstone project of their choosing, with approval and guidance from department staff. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBITIES: These tables represent the types of duties required by the intern in different areas of study. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected. * Digital Preservation * Summary - Assist with file management, record keeping, and the digitization of HPC documents. Research component optional. * Possible Activities - Scanning and indexing local historical materials, digitizing HPC records and documents, preparing files for use within a content management system, and organizing the HPC file storage system. * Relevant Interests/ Trajectory - Library sciences, archival studies, history, local history, historic preservation. * Preservation Fieldwork * Summary - Assist and support department staff with widespread field surveys of local historic landmarks. * Possible Activities - Photography and record keeping, architectural survey and description, and historic research. * Relevant Interests/ Trajectory - Architecture, urban planning, GIS, history, local history, historic preservation. * Preservation Outreach * Summary - Assist and support department staff with outreach activities to improve public awareness of historic preservation and the importance of local history. * Possible Activities - Preparing presentations, drafting newsletters or mailers, and putting together mailing lists. * Relevant Interests/ Trajectory - Graphic design, public outreach, communications, history, local history, historic preservation. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: * Must have experience with Microsoft Office and Windows file structure * Interest in historic preservation and the history of South Bend * Experience with or comfortable learning about file organization tactics * Experience with or comfortable learning about historic architecture * Degree or coursework experience in the fields of history, architecture, and/or archaeology preferred but not required KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFEREED: * Ability to work with a degree of autonomy * Enjoyment of working and interacting with a variety of people * Must be flexible, courteous, and interested in public service * Excellent communication, writing, and analytical skills * Ability to work well with others * Quick learner EQUIPMENT: Windows desktop and/or laptop computer, printer and scanner.
