About the position

The Historic Preservation Program Analyst plays a crucial role in the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's Division for Historic Preservation. This position is responsible for implementing the work of the Survey and National Register Unit, which includes directing historic resource surveys, preparing evaluations for historic properties, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. The analyst will work closely with local sponsors and property owners to guide them through the nomination process for the State and National Registers of Historic Places, while also participating in public meetings and site visits.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate state and federal consultation submissions to determine the presence of eligible historic properties.
  • Prepare nominations for the State and National Register of Historic Places and guide property owners in their development.
  • Participate in public informational meetings and present nominations to the New York State Board for Historic Preservation.
  • Assist local sponsors in designing historic resources surveys and evaluate completed surveys.
  • Review incoming data for the Cultural Resource Information System (CRIS) and maintain the database of historic properties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in art history, architectural history, cultural anthropology, historic preservation, historic preservation planning, public history, urban history, or U.S. History and two years of experience in a technical or professional capacity working with historic preservation projects.
  • Master's degree in any of the above disciplines and one year of qualifying experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with public speaking and presenting to boards or committees.
  • Familiarity with the National Historic Preservation Act and New York State Historic Preservation Act.
