About the position

The Historical Preservation Architect serves as the USPS Federal Historic Preservation Officer, leading the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the National Historic Preservation program. This role ensures compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) while providing technical guidance on the conservation of historic sites and artifacts. The architect supports construction and repair projects impacting historical properties, identifying resources, estimating costs, and developing design scopes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the NHPA review process for federally funded and permitted projects impacting historic sites.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to protect historic and pre-historic items.
  • Review and evaluate proposed actions involving historic properties to ensure preservation activities are conducted.
  • Support the planning, design, and implementation of construction projects from inception to completion.
  • Manage record-keeping processes and databases for the Historical Preservation Program.
  • Coordinate activities of the USPS artwork review committee and provide advisory support.
  • Negotiate and execute Mural Loan Agreements for historical murals.
  • Identify USPS properties eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in Architecture or related engineering field, or current state registration as an Architect or Engineer.
  • Knowledge of architecture, engineering, and building construction for reviewing repair and alteration work.
  • Ability to perform project management activities including planning, tracking, and scheduling tasks.
  • Ability to maintain electronic data tracking and record-keeping systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for developing management briefings and reports.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws regarding historic preservation.
  • Ability to serve as a liaison to internal and external stakeholders on preservation matters.
