About the position

The Histotechnologist at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is responsible for processing human tissue and body fluids, which includes various tasks such as accessioning, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping, labeling, and distributing samples to pathologists for evaluation and diagnosis. This role emphasizes technical knowledge sharing, teamwork, and maintaining high-quality standards in laboratory practices.

Responsibilities

  • Process human tissue and body fluids including accessioning, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping, labeling, and distribution to pathologists.
  • Share technical knowledge with co-workers and assist in training and orientation of new employees/students.
  • Promote morale and improve associate satisfaction scores.
  • Respond professionally to customer requests and inquiries, ensuring completion of tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers regarding questions and issues.
  • Adapt work habits to meet changing customer needs and improve service.
  • Assist other associates during high volume workloads.
  • Maintain competency requirements for self and department staff.
  • Limit personal phone calls to maintain productivity.
  • Demonstrate positive behaviors supportive of change and work independently.
  • Utilize time efficiently to maintain department functions when regular workload is complete.
  • Cross-train between laboratory areas and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Take responsibility for actions and seek ways to correct mistakes.
  • Produce high-quality tissue sections and stains within required time frames.
  • Prepare, evaluate, and stain histology samples according to guidelines.
  • Ensure proper storage of slide and block archive material.
  • Perform quality control and equipment maintenance, correcting malfunctions as needed.
  • Identify and resolve technical problems, adapting procedures for special tissues.
  • Efficiently use the LIS to accession specimens and order tests according to protocols.
  • Stay current on all written or electronic communication and enhance knowledge through continuing education opportunities.
  • Utilize department resources and follow established safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or Graduate of a Technical School
  • HT(Histotechnologist)-ACCP Certified or Equivalent
