About the position

As a Histotechnologist at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, you will play a crucial role in the processing of human tissue and body fluids. Your responsibilities will include accessioning, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping, labeling, and distributing samples to the pathologist for final evaluation and diagnosis. This position is essential in ensuring that high-quality tissue sections and stains are produced within a time frame that contributes to effective patient care. You will be expected to maintain a clean, well-stocked, and organized work area, and to take responsibility for your actions, openly admitting mistakes and seeking ways to correct them. In addition to your technical duties, you will share your knowledge with co-workers, assist in the training and orientation of new employees and students, and serve as a resource for current staff, students, and physicians. You will be involved in promoting morale and improving associate satisfaction scores, while also responding professionally to customer requests and inquiries. Your ability to adapt to changing customer needs and work cooperatively with other members of the hospital and system will be vital. You will also be responsible for maintaining competency requirements for yourself and those in your department, ensuring that you stay current on all written or electronic communication. Participation in mandatory and continuing education opportunities will be expected to enhance your technical and professional knowledge. You will utilize Personal Protective Equipment and follow established chemical hygiene and biohazard protocols to ensure a safe working environment.

Responsibilities

  • Process human tissue and body fluids including accessioning, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping, labeling, and distribution to the pathologist.
  • Share technical knowledge with co-workers and assist with training and orientation of new employees/students.
  • Promote morale and encourage others to improve associate satisfaction scores.
  • Respond professionally to customer requests and inquiries, ensuring completion of tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers regarding questions, issues, or problems.
  • Adapt work habits and schedules to meet changing customer needs.
  • Assist other associates during high volume workloads.
  • Maintain a clean, well-stocked, and organized work area.
  • Perform quality control and equipment maintenance, correcting malfunctions as needed.
  • Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) efficiently to manage specimens and order tests.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or Graduate of a Technical School is required.
  • HT(Histotechnologist)-ACCP Certified or Equivalent is required.
  • No previous experience is required.

Nice-to-haves
