About the position

The Maintenance Mechanic at Helen Keller Services (HKS) is responsible for providing maintenance services to ensure the safety and functionality of the facilities in Hempstead, Islandia, and Wantagh. This role involves executing maintenance tasks that align with HKS's mission and objectives, ensuring a safe environment for consumers, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Conduct regular inspections to determine necessary maintenance and repair work.
• Plan the sequence of repairs and maintenance following accepted trade practices.
• Advise supervisor of any unsafe or hazardous conditions.
• Perform electrical maintenance including repairs to starters, motors, breakers, and switchgear.
• Install electrical apparatus, fixtures, and equipment, including changing light bulbs and switches.
• Maintain fire alarm and nurse call systems.
• Demonstrate proficiency with hand-tools and testing devices.
• Maintain and repair small motors and equipment.
• Install, maintain, repair, and replace building structures such as walls, ceilings, and doors.
• Maintain an inventory of tools and supplies necessary for maintenance and repairs.
• Advise on the acceptability of work performed by outside contractors and report any hazards.
• Perform snow removal as directed.
• Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor or department director.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Experience in building trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or masonry is preferred.
• Some technical school education is preferred.
