About the position

The Hospice Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for providing compassionate care to patients at the end of life in a hospice setting. This role involves assisting patients with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, and providing emotional support to patients and families, ensuring comfort, dignity, and quality of life during their final stages.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, grooming, feeding, dressing, toileting, and ambulation.
  • Perform basic medical tasks including monitoring vital signs and reporting changes to the supervising nurse.
  • Provide personal care for patients, including skin care, repositioning, and maintaining patient hygiene.
  • Provide compassionate support to patients and their families, offering comfort and a calm presence.
  • Listen to patient and family concerns, assisting them with understanding hospice processes and alleviating anxieties.
  • Encourage patient activities that support emotional well-being, such as reading or listening to music.
  • Accurately document care provided, observations, and any changes in patient status.
  • Communicate regularly with the interdisciplinary care team to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and supportive environment for the patient, including light housekeeping as needed.
  • Assist family members in understanding patient care needs and offer guidance for providing comfort and support.

Requirements

  • Current CNA certification in the state of employment.
  • Prior experience in hospice, palliative, or end-of-life care is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide emotional support.
  • Empathy, patience, and a calm demeanor in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Attention to detail for accurate documentation and reporting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in patient monitoring.
