About the position

The Hospital Assistant II position at UC Davis Health System involves providing patient work-up for comprehensive Ophthalmology and Optometry services across various locations. The role focuses on patient assessment, visual acuity testing, and assisting with pre-operative procedures, ensuring high-quality care in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient work-up and visual assessments for comprehensive Ophthalmology and Optometry services.
  • Perform pre-operative procedures as required.
  • Document patient medical and ophthalmic history accurately and legibly.
  • Assess visual acuity using various methods and tools.
  • Conduct visual fields testing and recognize potential defects.
  • Perform stereopsis and color vision tests, documenting results accurately.
  • Measure intraocular pressure and understand the implications of results.
  • Conduct alignment and motility examinations, recognizing abnormalities.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic drugs and understand ocular pharmacology.
  • Train patients on the use of contact lenses and ensure proper techniques are followed.
  • Capture corneal topography and assist with OCT scans.

Requirements

  • Completion of the Ophthalmic Medical Assisting course within six months of hire.
  • Some experience in a similar role or function is required.
  • Experience in Ophthalmology is necessary.
  • Knowledge and skills in medical and ophthalmic history taking.
  • Ability to document medications and allergies accurately.
  • Skills to assess visual acuity across all age groups.
  • Knowledge of visual pathway and disease processes affecting visual fields.
  • Ability to perform and document stereopsis and color vision tests accurately.
  • Knowledge of tonometry principles and implications for optic nerve health.
  • Ability to perform alignment and motility examinations accurately.
  • Knowledge of lensometry and ability to read lens powers accurately.
  • Knowledge of ocular pharmacology and ability to administer topical drugs.

Nice-to-haves

  • COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) certification within twelve months of hire.
