About the position

The Hospital Lab Tech position at UCSF involves providing essential laboratory services to both inpatient and outpatient clients. The role primarily focuses on specimen collection, preparation, and processing, ensuring accurate record-keeping and adherence to established protocols. The technician may work across various UCSF Health sites and is responsible for a range of tasks including phlebotomy, clerical duties, and assisting in laboratory processing as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Collect specimens according to protocol for inpatient and outpatient clients.
  • Prepare specimens for laboratory analysis and maintain accurate records.
  • Label and distribute appropriate containers for specimen collection.
  • Provide instructions for complex tests and assist in bone marrow collections.
  • Perform clerical duties and specimen processing tasks.
  • Enter data into computer systems and prepare specimens for transport to the main lab.
  • Assist in the Clinical Laboratory Processing section as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college with relevant courses and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a current phlebotomy certificate issued by California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services.
  • Experience in performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient types.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and effective communication abilities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and flexibility to work at various UCSF locations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous knowledge of and experience in a clinical lab setting.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience in an inpatient hospital setting.
