About the position

The Hospital Laboratory Technician will provide essential laboratory services to both inpatient and outpatient clients at UCSF Health. This role involves specimen collection, preparation for analysis, and maintaining accurate records, ensuring compliance with established protocols. The technician will perform phlebotomy across various UCSF locations and assist in clerical tasks related to specimen processing.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting specimens according to established protocols.
  • Preparing specimens for laboratory analysis and maintaining accurate records of collected samples.
  • Performing phlebotomy at all UCSF Health locations, including Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Mission Bay, and various satellite clinics.
  • Labeling and distributing collection containers for other specimens and providing instructions for complex tests.
  • Handling clerical tasks, processing specimens, entering data into the computer, and preparing specimens for transport to the main laboratory.
  • Picking up specimens from blood draw areas and clinics and delivering them to the main laboratory.
  • Assisting in Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy or Processing sections as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Skilled in Lab Specimen Central Processing and experience in performing Phlebotomy on a broad range of patient types.
  • Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical, or social sciences, and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a current phlebotomy certificate (CPT1) issued by California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services.
  • Demonstrates computer skills, human relation, and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations and at off-site locations as assigned.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous knowledge of and experience in a clinical lab setting, and medical terminology preferred.
  • Previous Phlebotomy experience in an In-Patient hospital setting.
