About the position

The Hospital Paramedic plays a crucial role in providing emergency care to patients under the guidance of the shift supervisor and clinical direction of the Emergency Department Physician. This position involves collecting and conveying patient information, assisting in treatment plans, and ensuring patient safety while maintaining effective communication with the healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care in accordance with established policies and procedures of OU Health.
  • Carries out treatment plan in collaboration with the patient, the patient's family, and members of the healthcare team.
  • Maintains clear communication with attending physician and licensed nurse about all patient care issues.
  • Observes and reports patients' signs or symptoms.
  • Contributes information to the licensed nurse for the development and modification of the patient's plan of care.
  • Assists with the licensed nurse in delivering and documenting care provided to the patient.
  • Provides for patient safety.
  • Maintains competence with charting.
  • Takes vital signs and measures and records patients' input and output.
  • Attaches oxygen and cardiac monitor, monitors patients' cardiac rhythm, performs 12 Lead EKG, documents EKG strips, and suctions patients' airways as directed.
  • Receives patients from EMS personnel and prepares them for the physician's care.
  • Collects routine laboratory specimens as directed by the physician.
  • Performs basic laboratory procedures, venipunctures, and insertion/removal of peripheral intravenous catheters.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Paramedic training program.
  • Two (2) years of hospital and/or pre-hospital experience providing immediate stabilization and transport of sick and injured patients.
  • Current license issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health as a Paramedic.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
  • ACLS (American Heart Association) required within 3 months of hire.

  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to type accurately.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with emphasis on providing customer service.
  • Good computer skills with familiarity and/or ability to learn Microsoft Office, Teletracking, and other software applications.
  • Knowledge of commonly used hospital-based computer programs.
