About the position

The Hospital Phlebotomist position at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission involves performing various laboratory support procedures, primarily focusing on phlebotomy and specimen processing. This role is essential for ensuring accurate laboratory testing and patient care, working during the night shift from 9:00 PM to 7:30 AM. The position offers a $5000 sign-on bonus and comprehensive benefits from day one, including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as a student loan repayment program.

Responsibilities

  • Collects patient, physician, and test order information to create patient accounts.
  • Verifies patient identification, insurance information, physician credentials, and test order requirements.
  • Performs blood specimen collection including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
  • Receives and processes patient specimens, including separating specimens by centrifugation prior to testing.
  • May include transporting specimens and aliquoting different sample types as needed.
  • Loads preanalytical instruments or delivers specimens to the testing department.
  • Accessioning of surgical cases requiring knowledge of anatomy.
  • Sets up cultures and inoculates petri dishes for bacterial growth.
  • Processes, stores, ships, modifies, and selects compatible blood products using a validated Transfusion Information System.
  • Performs preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned.
  • Cleans and disinfects selected laboratory equipment and spaces.
  • Maintains inventory control and supply stocking.
  • Maintains workspaces in an organized manner and properly stores documentation.
  • Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing as needed.
  • Facilitates operation of assigned department, including clerical and receptionist duties.
  • Assists in training new staff and students, may act as a preceptor.
  • Provides resolution to customer service issues and supports education to clinical staff.
  • Participates in laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities.
  • Adheres to compliance plans and protects confidentiality of patient information.
  • Follows safety policies and demonstrates understanding of Chemical Hygiene and Infection Control policies.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Certification required.
  • Technical skills related to laboratory procedures or processes preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and comprehend text and numbers in English.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Nice-to-haves

  • Six months of relevant healthcare experience preferred.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.
