About the position

The Hospital Phlebotomist at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is responsible for performing various laboratory support procedures, including phlebotomy and specimen processing. This full-time night position requires the collection of blood specimens and the management of laboratory activities to ensure efficient operations. The role emphasizes the importance of patient care and safety while adhering to compliance and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collects patient, physician, and test order information to create patient accounts.
  • Performs blood specimen collection including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
  • Receives and processes patient specimens, including centrifugation prior to testing.
  • Aliquots different sample types and loads preanalytical instruments or delivers them to the testing department.
  • Performs cytopreparatory staining and accessioning of surgical cases.
  • Sets up cultures and inoculates petri dishes for bacterial growth.
  • Processes, stores, ships, and selects compatible blood products using a validated Transfusion Information System.
  • Conducts preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned.
  • Cleans and disinfects laboratory equipment and spaces.
  • Maintains organized workspaces and properly stores documentation.
  • Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing as needed.
  • Facilitates operation of the department through clerical and receptionist duties.
  • Assists in training new staff and students, acting as a preceptor when assigned.
  • Resolves customer service issues and supports education to clinical staff.
  • Participates in laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities.
  • Performs waived testing and associated quality control, maintenance, and documentation.
  • Adheres to compliance plans and protects patient confidentiality.
  • Follows safety policies and demonstrates understanding of chemical hygiene and infection control.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Certification.
  • Technical skills related to laboratory procedures.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to read and comprehend text and numbers in English.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to handle infectious biological specimens and hazardous materials safely.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program.
  • Six months of relevant healthcare experience.
