About the position

The Hospital Veterinarian at Petco plays a crucial role in providing high-quality veterinary care in a full-service hospital environment. This position involves diagnosing and treating a variety of medical conditions in pets, performing surgical and dental procedures, and ensuring exceptional patient care. The veterinarian will work collaboratively with a dedicated team to enhance the overall health and well-being of pets while fostering a positive experience for pet parents.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care.
  • Utilize a problem-based approach to develop a complete problem list for every patient examined and create appropriate treatment plans.
  • Document all patient observations, findings, treatments, and client interactions in the medical record accurately and concisely.
  • Perform routine and complex surgical procedures including spays/neuters, abdominal exploratory surgeries, and mass removals.
  • Conduct routine and complex dental procedures, including full dental examinations and extractions.
  • Develop treatment plans for patients undergoing day hospitalization and ensure effective communication with referral hospitals for continuity of care.
  • Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at the beginning and end of shifts.
  • Disseminate knowledge throughout the staff to improve care and communication provided to patients and clients.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
  • Active licensure as a veterinarian in the state of employment or ability to obtain by start date.
  • Current DEA license and Controlled Substance License, if applicable.
  • USDA Category I Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date.
  • Comfortable performing anesthesia and routine surgeries including canine and feline spays, neuters, mass removals, and dentals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassionate and sympathetic demeanor, maintaining professionalism in stressful situations.
  • Strong telephone and computer skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a veterinary hospital setting.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
