About the position

The Hospital Veterinarian at Petco is responsible for providing high-quality veterinary care in a full-service hospital environment. This role involves diagnosing and treating a variety of medical conditions in pets, performing surgical and dental procedures, and ensuring exceptional patient and client experiences. The veterinarian will work collaboratively with a team of professionals to uphold the standards of care and contribute to the overall success of the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care.
  • Utilize a problem-based approach to develop complete problem lists, differential diagnoses, diagnostic plans, and appropriate treatments.
  • Document all patient observations, findings, treatments, and client interactions in the medical record.
  • Perform routine and complex surgical procedures including spays/neuters and mass removals.
  • Conduct routine and complex dental procedures including evaluations and extractions.
  • Develop treatment plans for patients undergoing hospitalization and ensure continuity of care with referral hospitals.
  • Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at the beginning and end of shifts.
  • Disseminate knowledge throughout staff to improve care and communication.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
  • Active licensure as a veterinarian in the state of practice or ability to obtain by start date.
  • Current DEA license and Controlled Substance License, if applicable.
  • USDA Category I Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date.
  • Comfortable performing anesthesia and routine surgeries including spays, neuters, and dentals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassionate and sympathetic demeanor, maintaining professionalism in stressful situations.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • Team player willing to learn new techniques and accept change.
