About the position

The Oregon House Speaker's Office is seeking an experienced Communications Director to lead its communication efforts, both externally and internally, regarding the legislative and budget priorities of the Oregon House. This role involves managing the Speaker's communications, including speechwriting, press releases, social media, and other written materials, while ensuring that messaging resonates with Oregonians and reflects their values. The position requires strong writing skills, familiarity with various communication media, and a proactive approach to engaging the public and the press.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an innovative communications strategy to engage Oregonians in their democracy.
  • Work with the Speaker and Chief of Staff to create a communications plan for the legislative session and interim.
  • Craft external messaging, talking points, press releases, media Q&As, speeches, and opinion pieces for the Speaker.
  • Engage other legislators in their communications around key legislative priorities.
  • Create press strategies, manage media outreach, and develop relationships with reporters.
  • Create timely, compelling content to tell policy stories across various channels and mediums.
  • Translate complex policy goals into accessible language.
  • Ensure the Capitol community is updated on key developments through internal communications.
  • Manage and optimize the Speaker's online presence and social media platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and seven (7) to nine (9) years of experience in communications or a related field.
  • Strong writing skills and experience with new and emerging communications media.
  • Experience working with the press and managing media relations.
  • Ability to create clear and compelling content for diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of Oregon's political landscape and the legislative process.

  • Ability to communicate in multiple languages.
  • Multimedia skills such as photography and videography.
