About the position

The Housing Counselor will work under the supervision of the Diversion Program Manager to assist clients seeking shelter by employing conflict resolution strategies and a client-centered approach. The role focuses on empowering individuals to navigate their path back to housing while maintaining a professional and respectful environment. The position requires adaptability and a commitment to the coalition's values.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate creative problem-solving conversations to identify solutions to immediate housing crises for all households that enter the Intake Center.
  • Identify and implement strategies to prevent homeless persons from entering shelters.
  • Provide conflict resolution and mediation services with clients' landlords, family, or friends.
  • Assist clients with connections to family and other supports.
  • Provide strengths-based case management to all Diversion clientele.
  • Bolster clients' ability to think for themselves, weigh options, advocate for their needs, and act on their behalf.
  • Assist clients with access to mainstream services and benefits.
  • Provide assistance with locating affordable housing and advocacy.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills in building relationships with all staff and clients.
  • Treat all guests, volunteers, and staff with respect and dignity.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information.
  • Adhere to Coalition policies and procedures.
  • Conduct intakes and enter client information accurately in the Homeless Manager Information System (HMIS).
  • Perform other duties necessary for the effective operation of the program as assigned by the Diversion/Intake Program Manager.
  • Monitor productivity measurements closely, with an expectation of successfully diverting no less than thirty (30) clients per month.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent college credits in a social services field; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Five or more years of documented social service experience if no degree is held.
  • Experience in homeless services, case management, mental health, permanent supportive housing, and rapid rehousing preferred.
  • Ability to engage empathetically and non-judgmentally with clients in stressful situations.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Cultural competence across diverse populations.
  • Ability to manage a work schedule and keep appointments as scheduled.
  • Problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
