About the position

The Housing & Legal Assistance Intern at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) will provide essential services to refugees and victims of oppression, focusing on housing resources, legal advocacy, and support for various vulnerable populations. This role is designed for individuals interested in social work or law, offering hands-on experience in a dynamic environment that emphasizes cultural immersion and client self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with housing stabilization, including food orders and housing applications.
  • Provide legal advocacy for domestic violence victims and assist with legal processes such as protective orders and divorce documents.
  • Support clients in navigating state benefits, including food stamps and cash assistance applications.
  • Conduct needs assessments, budgeting, and action plans for clients.
  • Participate in case staffing and staff meetings, maintaining files and case notes.

Requirements

  • Background in Prelaw, Social Work, Public Health, or related fields.
  • Experience working with refugees or diverse populations.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Motivated, flexible, and able to work independently while managing time effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in Arabic, Swahili, Dari, Kinyarwanda, or French.
