About the position

The Housing & Legal Assistance Intern at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) will provide essential services to refugees and victims of oppression, focusing on housing resources, legal advocacy, and support for various vulnerable populations. This role is designed for individuals interested in social work or law, offering hands-on experience in a dynamic environment that emphasizes cultural immersion and client self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide housing resources and stabilization services to clients.
  • Assist with tenant advocacy and eviction prevention efforts.
  • Support clients in navigating the immigration process and legal systems.
  • Facilitate referrals to Legal Aid for domestic violence victims.
  • Assist clients with divorce documents and protective orders.
  • Conduct needs assessments, budgeting, and action plans for clients.
  • Perform home visits and maintain case files and notes.
  • Participate in case staffing and staff meetings.

Requirements

  • Background in Prelaw, Social Work, Public Health, or related fields.
  • Experience working with refugees or diverse populations.
  • Motivated and flexible with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in Arabic, Swahili, Dari, Kinyarwanda, or French.
